Squirt B Team Goes PINK Breast Cancer Awareness

By Christine Ausmus
OCT 21, 2009

There were a lot of confused looks in Dallas on Sunday, October 18th as the San Antonio Thunder Squirt B team took the ice. Hot pink laces, pink stick tape and pink bandanas were a mandatory part of the players uniforms that day during their games versus the Dallas Penguins and the Dallas Scots.

The players were doing their part to show good citizenship by honoring those who have lost their battle with or who have survived Breast Cancer as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It was also a chance for the players to honor Amy Fritz. Amy is the mother of Thunder Squirt B player, Nick Fritz, and she is a breast cancer survivor. Thunder Wears Pink

Coaches Matt Ausmus and Jeff Campbell also got in on the action and sported pink ribbons on their jackets and wore pink bandanas. And so did parents, siblings and other relatives of the players. Many of the parents and coaches from the other teams commented about how classy that was of our team. The boys learned a valuable lesson and showed Dallas how much spirit the San Antonio Thunder Squirt B players and families have.

The weekend was a huge 'PINK' success as our kids not only stood out for their play on the ice, but for their effort to help raise breast cancer awareness.

On Sunday morning the Squirt 'B' Team opened up with the Dallas Penguins and had a 3-2 advantage going into the third period only to see their lead fade away as the Penguins scored three times in the final stanza to win 5-3 in a very thrilling game. Mason Ausmus scored all three Thunder goals. Gabriel Gamer had a stellar performance in net stopping 24 of 29 shots.

In the finale of the day the Thunder ran out of steam as they faced off against the Dallas Scots and fell to them by a 7-2 margin.
